Practical TravelTaxi & TransportationHow-to

Taxis are useful in Seoul when you have luggage, miss the last train, or want to avoid several transfers. For most everyday trips, choose a regular metered taxi. If you want to request a car with a foreign phone number and an overseas card, TABA is one option; for a pre-arranged multilingual airport pickup, look at International Taxi.

This guide explains the regular Seoul fare, how to request a ride, and what to check before you pay. Fare and app information was checked against official sources on 11 October 2026.

Choose the right taxi for your trip

  • Regular sedan: the straightforward choice for ordinary city journeys. Check passenger and luggage space before committing to a group trip.
  • Deluxe taxi: a higher-fare option. Do not assume the regular sedan rate applies.
  • Large or van taxi: worth considering for more passengers or bulky bags. Vehicle categories and pricing vary, so check the specific service rather than choosing by appearance alone.
  • International Taxi: designed for foreign visitors, with multilingual drivers and airport-transfer services. Confirm the language and booking arrangements you need.

Seoul taxi fares: base price and late-night surcharge

For a regular Seoul sedan taxi, the daytime base fare is ₩4,800 for the first 1.6 km. After that, the daytime distance increment is ₩100 per 131 metres; the time increment is ₩100 per 30 seconds. Distance and time charges can partly apply together below 15.72 km/h, so a slow trip can cost more than a distance-only estimate.

Regular Seoul sedan taxi rates by time of day
Time in Seoul Late-night surcharge Base fare, first 1.6 km
04:00–22:00 None ₩4,800
22:00–23:00 20% ₩5,800
23:00–02:00 40% ₩6,700
02:00–04:00 20% ₩5,800

Trips outside the city can involve additional surcharges, while tolls and app or service fees can affect the total. Before a long journey, check which charges the quote includes. Luxury vehicles and app-booked vans may have different pricing. Compare the actual ride option rather than multiplying the regular sedan base fare.

How to hail and pay for a regular taxi

Use a taxi stand when one is nearby, or hail from a safe place on the pavement. The sign 빈차 means vacant; 예약 means reserved. Prepare your destination’s Korean name and street address, ideally with the correct entrance marked on a map.

  1. Before getting in, check the vehicle has enough seats and luggage space. For a street-hailed ride, confirm your intended payment method.
  2. Show the destination and make sure the meter is running for a metered trip.
  3. At arrival, check the meter and any explained extras. Keep the receipt and check the seat and boot before leaving.

Seoul’s official guidance lists cash, credit cards and transport cards as payment methods. Do not rely on a particular overseas card or phone wallet working in every car; carry a backup. For app-paid rides, follow the app’s payment arrangement to avoid paying twice. See Seoul’s taxi-use guide.

Using TABA with a foreign phone number and card

TABA’s official site confirms international phone-number registration and support for international cards, including Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and JCB. Phone verification is still required. Set up the app before you need a ride, especially if your travel data plan does not receive SMS.

  1. Download TABA through the official site’s app-store links and complete account verification.
  2. Add a supported payment method. Check your pickup point and destination carefully.
  3. Review the available vehicle, estimated fare, route and payment details before requesting.
  4. Wait for an assignment, then match the arriving car’s registration number to the app.
  5. After the ride, check the app payment record. TABA automatically charges the fare; paying the driver separately in cash can mean paying twice.

The current FAQ says TABA does not support advance booking. Availability depends on time and location. It also explains that a temporary card hold can appear separately from the final charge; use in-app support if a payment remains unclear.

English address search is useful, but it does not establish that your driver speaks English. As an extra precaution, save a screenshot of the destination and stay near a clear pickup point. Button labels and screens can change, so use the current app’s instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot tutorial.

When to choose International Taxi instead

If a scheduled airport pickup or a multilingual driver is important, review the official International Taxi service. Before reserving, confirm the vehicle, passenger and bag limits, meeting point, flight-delay procedure, price inclusions and cancellation terms. Do not assume a standard city taxi quote covers a pre-arranged airport transfer.

For an airport departure, work backwards from your airline’s check-in deadline and allow for traffic. A cheap estimate is little comfort if the pickup time leaves no margin. For arrival, use the airport’s designated taxi queue or the meeting instructions for your confirmed booking.

Incheon Airport: taxi or private transfer?

For Incheon Airport to Seoul, compare the full journey, including luggage, the final hotel walk and traffic. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul transport guide compares AREX, airport buses, taxis and private vans by traveler type.

If your family or group wants to travel together with several bags, the SeoulExperience private airport van is a pre-arranged option for up to five passengers between Incheon Airport and Seoul accommodation. Check availability for your pickup time, luggage limits, the full quote and cancellation terms before booking.

Commercial disclosure: SeoulTravelNow.com is connected with SeoulExperience.com. The private van is a paid option; public transport may be better value for lighter trips.

Pickup, luggage and payment mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong side of the road: inspect the pickup pin before requesting; a nearby pin can still be awkward to reach.
  • Wrong branch or entrance: compare the address, not just the English hotel or restaurant name.
  • Too many bags: four seats do not guarantee space for four large suitcases.
  • Confusing an estimate with a fixed fare: check what the chosen service actually promises.
  • Leaving without a record: keep the receipt or app trip details until you have checked your belongings.

When a taxi is worth the cost

A short taxi ride can be worthwhile for a final uphill section, a tired group, or a route that would otherwise involve several transfers. For a journey across busy central districts, compare the estimated driving time with the subway. Our Seoul travel budget guide can help you leave room for occasional taxi trips rather than relying on them for every journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use TABA without a Korean number?

Yes. Its official FAQ accepts international numbers, but you still need to complete verification. Test this before your first time-sensitive ride.

What should I do if I leave something in a taxi?

Keep the trip time, route, receipt and registration number. For an app trip, start with its lost-item or support function; for a street-hailed ride, use the operator details on the receipt.

Why is the taxi more expensive after 11 pm?

The regular Seoul sedan’s largest late-night surcharge applies from 23:00 to 02:00. Check the time band above and the vehicle category before comparing prices.

Uncle Choi’s takeaway

Choose the right vehicle, check the pickup point, and understand how the ride will be paid before you get in. Save your destination and trip record, and keep a backup payment method for street-hailed taxis.
