Hangang Haechi Car: Free Nanji–Mangwon Shuttle Guide (2026)

📍 MapoPractical TravelSeoul TransportGuide

The bright yellow vehicle with a pink Haechi face is not a taxi or a city sightseeing bus. The Hangang Haechi Car is a small park shuttle. This guide covers the Nanji–Mangwon route on the north bank, including the Square of Youth stop in the photographs, not the separate Banpo or Jamwon services.

Best use: combine a riverside outing with a short ride when seats are available. Do not make it your only way back to a timed reservation: there is a long afternoon break, limited capacity and no guaranteed seat.

Operating information checked 25 October 2026. This guide combines the site owner’s photographs and clearly labelled visit observations with researched transport information.

Recognise the stop, not just the character

The photographed sign says “Hangang Haechi car stop” and “The Square of Youth” (젊음의 광장). Owner-supplied photograph, used with permission; capture date not supplied.

Look for the purple-and-blue 한강 해치카 정거장 board. A general park entrance, a city-bus stop and a Haechi Car stop are not interchangeable. Save the Korean name of your intended stop so you can show it to the driver.

The operator lists these stops in order:

  1. Mangwon Underpass — 망원나들목
  2. Mirror Fountain — 거울분수
  3. Water Sports Center — 수상레포츠센터
  4. BTS Forest — BTS숲
  5. Water Playground — 물놀이장
  6. Square of Youth — 젊음의광장
  7. Nanji Campground — 난지캠핑장

The site map’s Nanji Campground pin is a campground reference point, not a precise Haechi boarding marker. Follow the operator’s stop map and the on-site sign.

This is a stop sequence, not a scale map. Use the official Nanji facilities map to orient yourself. The stop names do not mean the fountain, water playground or campground activities are open whenever the car runs.

Choose your approach: Mangwon or Nanji?

Coming from the subway and wanting a straightforward park outing? Start on the Mangwon side. The official Mangwon directions list buses Mapo 09 and Mapo 16 from Exit 1 of Mangwon Station (Line 6), or Exit 1 of Hapjeong Station (Lines 2 and 6), to Mangwon Hangang Park. After reaching the park, locate the Haechi stop at 망원나들목; do not wait for the yellow car at the ordinary city-bus stop.

Already heading to Nanji? The official Nanji directions list Seoul bus 9707 to 난지한강공원. They also describe a roughly 20-minute, 1.3 km walk from Mapo-gu Office Station Exit 7 along Hongjecheon, or a roughly 30-minute, 2 km approach from World Cup Stadium Station Exit 1. Those estimates reach the park, not necessarily your boarding point. Check the stop map before committing to the longer walk.

Travelling with someone who cannot comfortably walk the fallback route? Decide the return plan first. A free shuttle is useful, but a full vehicle or a service interruption can leave a sizeable gap in an itinerary.

How to board without a Korean booking account

Seoul’s 2025 Nanji report describes free, no-reservation use for anyone, including foreign tourists. A 2026 city report also describes walk-up boarding, although that article focuses on Jamwon. No nationality or Korean-phone-number booking condition was found in the current operating notice.

  1. Find the marked stop and read its current board.
  2. Before boarding, show the driver your destination in Korean and confirm the direction.
  3. Let priority passengers board first. If the car is full, reassess whether waiting fits your plans.
  4. Ask about the return before getting off. Use designated stops only.

Useful phrases to show on your phone:

  • 난지캠핑장 가나요? Does this go to Nanji Campground?
  • 망원나들목 가나요? Does this go to Mangwon Underpass?
  • 여기서 돌아가는 마지막 차는 몇 시예요? What time is the last return service from here?

A practical timing plan, without a made-up timetable

For a weekday visit, aim to be at your chosen stop after the 14:00 start but comfortably before the afternoon break. For a weekend, the late morning gives you more flexibility. These are planning suggestions, not reserved departure slots.

Avoid arriving just before 16:00 and assuming the next car is one normal interval away. Likewise, do not build an evening restaurant booking around the published 20:00 closing time. Decide in advance how long you are willing to wait, and keep enough time to leave the park without the shuttle.

If your main purpose is a picnic, make the ride optional. If your main purpose is the car itself, check service conditions before making a special trip. The character design is easy to spot in the photograph below, but seeing a parked vehicle does not confirm that boarding is open.

A picnic near the Water Sports Center stop

Owner’s visit note: The site owner recommends the shade-tent picnic area near the Water Sports Center stop as a pleasant place to enjoy good weather by the river. The Haechi Car felt like a very small minibus, and there were few other riders during that visit. That is one visit’s impression, not a prediction of queues; the published limit remains 10 passengers.

Where a shade tent is allowed: The official designated-area notice lists the lawn in front of Nanji Information Center and a separate lawn in front of Parking Lot 1. Its map places the information-center lawn beside Parking Lot 2. Do not assume every lawn around the stop is permitted.

Which Parking Lot 2? Search for 난지 제2주차장, described on the official Nanji parking page as beside Nanji Information Center (난지안내센터 옆). Do not confuse it with Mangwon Parking Lot 2, beside Seoul Battleship Park. This supports a nearby parking-and-picnic combination, but we have not verified an exact walking time from a parking space to the Haechi stop.

Rules checked 25 October 2026: The 2026 shade-tent season is 1 March–30 November. A special extension allows use from 09:00 to 22:00 during 1 September–30 November 2026; do not apply that temporary end time to a later season. Use only the signed zones. Seoul’s tent guidance specifies a small, roughly 2 m × 2 m, four-person pop-up shade tent, with at least two sides open and no damage to plants. Nanji park rules prohibit cooking in ordinary picnic areas. Bring ready-to-eat food, and plan your journey home independently of the later tent-closing time.

Strollers, wheelchairs and weather: what is not guaranteed

The operator says strollers and wheelchairs can be carried. That does not establish step-free roll-on boarding, wheelchair securement or the ability to remain seated in a wheelchair. If any of those are essential, ask the operator before travelling: 02-3780-0814 (from overseas, +82-2-3780-0814).

We have not independently verified ramp dimensions, language support or a stop-by-stop final-departure timetable. Check the linked operating notice and the on-site board on your travel day rather than treating this article or an older photo as live service status.

Pair it with the right outing

For an event visit, read our Seoul BBQ Festival 2026 guide separately. The festival’s transport arrangements and the regular Haechi Car are different services; an event ticket or shuttle announcement does not reserve a place on this car.

Photo and research note: Three owner-supplied photographs show the vehicle, a marked stop and the picnic setting. The owner supplied these photographs and visit observations on 25 October 2026. No scene was generated or altered. The supplied date is not asserted as the shooting date. Published source information, visible signage and our itinerary advice are distinguished above.
