Seoul Museum of Art: A City Hall Rainy-Day Visit

Rain near City Hall does not have to mean another shopping mall. Seoul Museum of Art’s Seosomun Main Branch is a useful 90-minute art stop if you are already around Deoksugung. The important catch: the galleries are indoors, but the approach from the subway is outdoors and uphill. Bring an umbrella and choose the exhibition before you go.

Planning information checked November 5, 2026. This is a researched route, not a report of a personal visit. Times below are planning allowances unless identified as official.

Is this the right rainy-day stop?

  • Choose SeMA if you want to spend time with art, have roughly 90 minutes and are already in central Seoul. A free exhibition lets you decide how long to stay without building the day around an expensive ticket.
  • Choose a different plan if your main need is a completely sheltered journey, a guaranteed children’s activity or somewhere to leave large suitcases. None of those is promised here.
  • Check the branch name. Search for “서울시립미술관 서소문본관,” at 61 Deoksugung-gil. This is SeMA outside the palace, not MMCA Deoksugung inside the palace. Do not buy a palace ticket just to reach SeMA.

Hours, cost and the last-entry trap

  • Tuesday–Thursday: 10:00–20:00.
  • Friday: 10:00–21:00.
  • Weekends/public holidays: 10:00–18:00 in November–February; 10:00–19:00 in March–October.
  • Last admission: one hour before closing.
  • Closed Mondays and January 1; a public-holiday Monday is an exception.
  • General admission is free; some special exhibitions charge separately.

These are the museum’s current branch hours and directions. In winter, a Saturday arrival at 17:15 is already too late for entry, even though the building closes at 18:00. For an unhurried 90-minute visit, aim to arrive by 16:00 rather than treating 17:00 as your target.

Booking: SeMA’s official FAQ says exhibitions can be visited without a reservation. Workshops, educational programs and special arrangements have their own application rules. Check the specific exhibition page before travelling; free entry does not guarantee immediate admission or a place on a program.

What is on now?

Lynn Hershman Leeson: First Person Plural is listed for October 21, 2026–February 21, 2027, on the second and third floors, with free admission. Its approximately 200 works explore identity and technology through media including film, photography and installations.

That gives you a concrete reason to choose this stop: come if questions about screens, privacy and identity interest you. Do not expect a survey of Korean history or a room of famous traditional paintings. After the closing date, use SeMA’s current exhibition listings to choose a replacement before following this route.

From City Hall Station to the correct building

The museum gives City Hall Line 2 Exit 10 as 260 metres/about four minutes away, and Line 1 Exit 1 as 380 metres/about six minutes. These are operator estimates, not rainy-weather guarantees. Follow signs for the museum and confirm the address in your map app. Allow extra time for crossings and the uphill approach; these numbered exits are not a verified step-free route.

Simple route: City Hall Station → outdoor approach to SeMA Seosomun → exhibition galleries → return to City Hall. Keep Deoksugung as an optional extension after the rain, rather than a compulsory detour.

A flexible 90-minute visit

  1. First 10 minutes: ask at the information desk which galleries are open and whether the show has any entry restrictions. Deal with wet umbrellas and bags before starting; do not assume a locker will fit luggage.
  2. Next 55 minutes: choose one exhibition. Begin with its introduction, then spend longer with a handful of works that interest you. For video-based art, watching part of a work attentively is more useful than trying to count every room.
  3. Next 15 minutes: return to a work you want to reconsider, or take a seated break. Keep this time flexible rather than squeezing in another distant attraction.
  4. Final 10 minutes: collect belongings and check the weather before leaving. If the rain continues, take the direct station route. If it clears, decide whether you still have time and energy for Deoksugung’s separate palace visit.

This is an editorial pacing suggestion, not an official guided tour or a promise that every gallery will be open.

Bags, mobility and photographs

The museum’s accessibility guide lists free basement lockers, elevators and a first-floor nursing room opposite the elevator. Ask the first-floor information desk about stroller loans; official pages give differing age limits, so confirm eligibility before relying on one. Equipment availability and locker dimensions are not verified, so arrange large-bag storage separately. Ask the museum about the suitable entrance if you need a step-free approach.

Photography permission varies by exhibition. Check signs or ask staff before photographing artworks; do not assume that a free show permits photography. The exterior photo above is a licensed archival image, not evidence of current weather, displays or crowds.

Before adding the palace or another stop

A Deoksugung construction notice lists southern exterior-wall work through November 19, 2026, with Pyeongseongmun closed October 25–November 19. Do not plan this visit around that gate or an uninterrupted stone-wall loop. Follow current signs outside the palace.

If you are starting far from City Hall and want a longer indoor-focused day, compare the COEX rainy-day route instead. For SeMA, keep your budget simple: the currently listed exhibition costs ₩0, while transport, food and any later paid attraction are separate. Café service, live crowd levels and English-tour availability have not been confirmed for your visit.
